The Bride and Bridegroom

by Pastor James Nyabola

Ephesians 5:25-32 " Husbands love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it; That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word, that he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish. So ought men to love their wives as their own bodies. He that loveth his wife loveth himself. For no man ever yet hated his own flesh; but nourisheth and cherisheth it, even as the Lord the church: For we are members of his body, of his flesh, and of his bones.  For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and shall be joined unto his wife, and they two shall be one flesh. This is a great mystery: but I speak concerning Christ and the church."

The relationship between a husband and wife is compared to the relationship between Christ and the church. The church is either the individual christian or the church as a whole. Either way, it still points to the same direction that the church is the bride of Jesus Christ.

John 3:28-29 "Ye yourselves bear me witness, that I said, I am not the Christ, but that I am sent before him. He that hath the bride is the bridegroom: but the friend of the bridegroom, which standeth and heareth him, rejoiceth greatly because of the bridegroom's voice: this my joy therefore is fulfilled."

John the Baptist was introducing Jesus Christ. Before the introduction, most people had thought that he was the Christ. John begins by stating that he is not the Christ and that he has only been sent ahead of Christ. He introduces himself as the bride of Jesus Christ which automatically means that Jesus Christ is the Bridegroom.

Romans 7:4 "Wherefore, my brethren, ye also are become dead to the law by the body of Christ; that ye should be married to another, even to him who is raised from the dead, that we should bring forth fruit unto God."

We died to the law so that we may belong to Jesus Christ. We had to be divorced from the law so that we could be married to Jesus Christ because we could not be in two marriages at the same time. In a marriage the bride bears children for the bridegroom. In this marrige, we as the bride should bear the fruits of the Holy Spirit unto the Bridegroom.

Is adultery a sin? Yes it is. The bible clearly states the relationship between husband and wife comparing it to Christ and the church. It is very important that we as the churhc remain loyal and faithful to Jesus Christ. On judgement day, we will be judged for our faithfulness.

Exodus 20:14 One of the ten commandments states "Thou shalt not commit adultery."

Leviticus 20:10 " And the man that committeth adultery with another man's wife, even he that committeth adultery with his neighbour's wife, the adulterer and the adulteress shall surely be put to death." If a man commits adultery with another man's wife, both the adluterer and the adulteress must be put to death. Deuteronomy 22:22 has the same message. "If a man be found lying with a woman married to an husband, then they shall both of them die, both the man that lay with the woman, and the woman: so shalt thou put away evil from Israel."

Jeremiah 23:10-11 "For the land is full of adulterers; for because of swearing the land mourneth; the pleasant places of the wilderness are dried up, and their course is evil, and their force is not right. For both prophet and priest are profane; yea, in my house have I found their wickedness, saith the LORD". The Bible is speaking of adultery, that the people are worshipping other gods. As a result, the whole land is cursed.

Jeremiah 5:7-8  "How shall I pardon thee for this? thy children have forsaken me, and sworn by them that are no gods: when I had fed them to the full, they then committed adultery, and assembled themselves by troops in the harlots' houses. They were as fed horses in the morning: every one neighed after his neighbour's wife."

There is a warning against the people as a result of worshipping other gods. The punishment of God the Almighty will be upon them.

As there can be physical adultery, so too can ther be unfaithfulness to the divine Bridegroom which is spiritual adultery. The Bible takes apostasy (turning away from God) and calls it spiritual adultery (turning away from the divine Bridegroom).
